We present two case stories of patients referred to an outpatient pain service with persistent pain. We pose some questions to help the reader think about the importance of exploring a patient’s narrative in depth to help them move forward with their pain problem. We then present a range of interesting, relevant peer reviewed papers that focus on exploring the patient stories and the language used when describing pain and structural images on investigations.
