On assessing Mr M 24h following injury, he was mobilising independently and did not require any supplementary oxygen. His pain score was 5/10 at rest and 8/10 on movement in bed. He was asked specifically about his ability to deep breathe, cough and the quality of his sleep, all of which were poor due to pain. On examination, he exhibited bruising over his right thoracic region, extending from the mid-axillary line posteriorly. On palpation, he was very tender over this region, with underlying surgical emphysema.
